In this essay I attempt to find out how the history from below has developed from the nineteenth century to now. I analyze some of the most important European and American authors and their works, trying to reflect about their methodology, scope and limits. I argue that the Zapatista Movement of 1994 was important to put again in the scene the people from below as actor in history, particularly the indigenous people. Finally, I try to show how a new discourse from below began to emerge from then to now, and why historians need to rescue it.
