Abstract

This document specifies the moment in the history of Guatemala when women achieved systematic access to education, and made the leap into higher education. Historical moments are described, the mechanisms of access to education for women, as well as establishing the thinking frame that allows for professionalization and the need for female work presented by the moment, based on the precepts of social motherhood, it highlights the contribution of the pioneers of higher education. The research data is the result of a historical survey of bibliographic, documentary and legislative sources that mark the process of inclusion of women in secondary and higher education. The National University opened its doors to women, from the issuance of a decree issued by President Justo Rufino Barrios on May 30, 1883, authorizing the creation of the Escuela Anexa de Comadronas, under the authority of the Facultad de Medicina y Farmacia of the Universidad de Guatemala, allowing women to enter the university for the first time to become professionals in the health area as midwives, as well as nursing by religious of the Order of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. It highlights the contributions of Florence Nightingale and Clara Barton, pioneers in their practice. Other aspects to emphasize in the research are nursing in Guatemala practiced by religious, the training of midwives and the historical processes to consolidate the professionalization of nurses, as well as expressing appreciation to nurses and health personnel who are currently working full-time giving much more of a commitment in the fight against Covid 19 in public and private hospitals in Guatemala.
