This article offers a historical approach to three educational elements: teaching, technology, and literacy by analyzing similarities and differences between today’s virtual education and the Lancasterian system of the early 19th century. Objective: to demonstrate that these elements, which are crucial today, were already present in that 19th-century system. Therefore, examining them from a contemporary perspective allows for a better understanding of both educational logics. Methodology: The study reviews key aspects of the Lancasterian method and discusses them in relation to modern virtual education. Discussion: The current dominance of technology in education should be analyzed in light of historical educational experiences, as these three elements have been part of an educational framework established over 200 years ago: liberal governmentality. Conclusion: To better navigate the present challenges in education, including rapid technological transformations, evolving teaching methods, and new literacy demands, a retrospective analysis is necessary. Such an approach enables a more balanced assessment of educational expectations and a more strategic direction of efforts toward academic quality.
